OUR PROGRAM

Daily Program

Our daily program draws on the following components.  We are also able to take advantage of special spaces in the school such as the library and the art room, build relationships with older students by participating in the book buddies program and enhance learning through field trips.

  • Free Play

During free play our children have the option to play in a variety of learning stations set up for them within the classroom. An example of these various stations include a rice/rock table, water table, games and puzzles, block area, and house/kitchen area. This provides the children the opportunity to work both independently and cooperatively in small groups.

  • Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts provide the children the opportunity to develop their fine motor skills by cutting, gluing and colouring. The children are taught to listen and follow basic instructions to complete their craft.  Children will be encouraged to participate in arts and crafts, but participation will not be mandatory.

  • Circle Time

On a weekly basis, a theme will be chosen for circle time.  This time will be used for discussing the chosen theme, singing songs, reading books, and playing games.

  • Creative Movement/Gym

Creative movement is an important activity for children.  Activities such as hopping, skipping, and dancing assist in the development of gross motor skills.  Creative movement will take place in the school gym, depending on availability, or inside the classroom.  Occasionally, the children will be taken outside for these activities, weather permitting.  Please dress your child according to the weather conditions for this purpose.

  • Music

Music will be incorporated into the daily schedule throughout all of the above activities using songs, dance and musical instruments.

  • Introduction to French

This part of the program will introduce French words, phrases, numbers, etc.  The children will be given the opportunity to participate in an array of fun activities helping to develop and consolidate different aspects of their skills, while being exposed to French language.  They will develop some vocabulary spontaneously and regard a second language as a natural part of their environment.  Early childhood is the best time to naturally learn a second language, as children are very receptive to building new skills in this period of their life.

  • Snack

Each parent shall be asked to provide a snack for their child each class, containing at least three of the four food groups as indicated in the Canada Food Guide.  Please label all containers.  There will be a list of suggested snacks posted in the classroom.  Please remember it is a snack, not a lunch.

Ecole Ile des Chenes School is a nut free facility, so absolutely no peanuts or nuts of any kind are allowed.
